Brain or Belly: What is Stopping Me From Losing Weight?

Weight loss does not come from talking about losing weight. It does not come from wishing you could lose weight. Weight loss doesn’t even come by really knowing you need to lose weight. It takes a change in your thinking and a change in your actions. It may be easy to blame your belly for being “hungry” all the time, but really the problem is your brain. If you can change the way you think, you can change the way you eat, act, and look.

There are many reasons that people over eat and eat an unhealthy diet, ranging from emotional eating to ignorance. By changing your attitude and changing your diet, you’ll be well on your way to finally losing those dreaded pounds.

Change your attitude

Everyone knows being healthy is a good thing. Therefore, most people have some kind of vague health goal, or at least idea, that they know they should live up to. If you are serious about losing weight, you will need more than a wish. It will take a commitment from you to a specific goal and plan.

Take 5 minutes and write down what results you would like to have and write down a few steps your going to take to get there. More details can be added later, but having any plan is better than having no plan. Hang your goals up on a piece of paper in your room or bathroom, somewhere that you will see them often. Remind yourself of what your moving towards. If you fail and mess up, take a look at your goals again and keep moving forward. If a horseman falls off of a horse, he doesn’t quit riding, he gets back on where he fell off.

Think of unhealthy food as your enemy. Until you think of something as your enemy, you are not going to treat it as your enemy. Throw out the tempting junk food that holds you back from your goals. Let your friends know for accountability and support.

Change your diet by adopting a few of these healthy ways to lose weight.

Fruits and veggies

Consume a lot of fruits and vegetables. They are rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals and low in calories and sugar. Substitute your refined grain treats with several servings of fruits and vegetables, or a low calorie salad and watch your belly lose the extra fat over time.

Beans and lentils

If your craving is becoming intolerable, smell a banana or a vanilla flavored food. This will trick your brain into thinking that you actually consumed the food.

Water

Drink two 16oz. Glasses of water before each time you eat. This is a small commitment with big results. This can aid in digestion and help suppress your hunger. Many times people eat when they are actually thirsty.

Snacking

Snacking on foods that are rich in unsaturated fats can lead to more fat deposits in the body and overall weight gain. So, in order to snack on healthy food, cut up vegetables like carrots, broccoli, tomatoes, etc and store them in a way in which they will be easily accessible when you are in the mood for some snacks. Put away all foods that contain trans fats or better still do not buy such foods. You can also snack on nuts that contain the good fats which in turn help in burning fat deposits.

Also, late night snacking can topple your resolve to eat healthy. Close your kitchen after dinner and keep unhealthy fried food out of reach. Staying away from your favorite fast food and other delicious dishes that are rich in calories can make you crave them more. So, make sure you find one day in a week or so when you can allow yourself the luxury of indulging in those kinds of foods. The key is to deal with your cravings in such a manner that you end up eating unhealthy food in moderation thus keeping the balance intact.

Plates

Use smaller blue colored plates. Downsizing your plates will make you feel like you are consuming almost the same amount of food as you used to before. Also, the color blue curbs your appetite unlike the colors red, orange or yellow that can incite it. Keep extra food out of reach so that you are not tempted to over indulge.

Exercise

The key to losing weight is to burn more calories than you consume. This can be possible by taking up some form of exercise that you enjoy and doing it at least 3-4 times a week. You can also make small changes that will matter over the long run. If you are parched for time to exercise, you can start out early and walk to your destination. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator is another good option. Getting up from your chair and moving about intermittently will also help you.
